Old Bridge man, 21, dies in jump from Rt. 35 bridge
SAYREVILLE - A 21-year-old Old Bridge man jumped to his death from the Victory Bridge at 8:42 a.m. Dec. 4.
According to police, Francis Lawrenz Ancheta parked his 2001 Nissan Altima on the shoulder of the road, engaging his emergency lights. A motorist noticed the vehicle and slowed down to offer assistance, then saw Ancheta standing on the railing.
Three additional motorists witnessed Ancheta's plunge from the bridge into the Raritan River below.
Water rescue officials from the Perth Amboy Fire Department located Ancheta's body and brought it to shore near the Hess docks. Rescuers took the body to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy, where Ancheta's property was released to family members.
Ancheta graduated from Old Bridge High School, where he played as a defensive end and tackle on the football team. He later attended Brookdale Community College in the Lincroft section of Middletown.
This was at least the third suicide in the past two years at the bridge, which runs from Sayreville to Perth Amboy along Route 35.
In May, two Middlesex County Utility Authority (MCUA) workers found the skeletal remains of Ziomara Rivera, a 24-year-old Perth Amboy woman who was suspected to have jumped from the bridge.
Former Woodbridge resident Joseph Palladino, 32, jumped to his death from the bridge in May 2006 shortly after murdering his estranged wife and her mother in South Amboy, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
