Old Bridge man robbed at home; shot 3 times
BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

OLD BRIDGE - A 68-year-old man was shot three times by two men who invaded his Emerald Lane home last week, taking cash and jewelry.

The suspects, two middle-aged white males, allegedly went to the victim's home posing as police officers around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 5. When the victim answered the door, the men, armed with guns, asked to speak to the man's wife, according to police. They then pushed their way inside the house.

"The two armed men overpowered him and tied him up with the belt from his robe," Old Bridge Police Lt. Robert Moser said.

The suspects put a handgun to the victim's head and forced him upstairs to a safe, police said. When the victim was reluctant to give the suspects the combination, they opened fire on him. One of the bullets struck his abdomen, exiting his body through his side, Moser said. Another bullet hit his left foot, and a third struck his right hand.

The victim managed to call police, despite the fact that the gunmen handcuffed him before they fled the scene with approximately $70,000 in cash, as well as jewelry.

The victim was treated at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, where he was said to be in good condition, according to Moser.

Old Bridge Police Chief Thomas H. Collow said police believe this was "an isolated incident," and it is being actively investigated.

"We are currently exploring all of our leads in this case," he said. "A home invasion is very serious. Thankfully, it's something we don't run into too much. This is a very serious situation where someone was shot as a result of the invasion. We're leaving no stone unturned here. We have several investigators looking into the case."

Police released a sketch of one of the suspects, describing him as a white male in his 40s, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 180-190 pounds, with "salt and pepper" hair and a stocky build.

Detective Michael Blahota is leading the investigation. Anyone who has information pertaining to the incident or the perpetrators can call Blahota at (732) 721-5600, ext. 3271.
