Human remains found in woods

OLD BRIDGE - Two off-duty township police officers discovered the remains of a township resident in a wooded area near Route 9 last week.

The officers, Jerry Palumbo and Greg Goy, found the body while they were hunting, roughly 50 yards deep into a wooded area off Route 9 and Perrine Road at 11:45 a.m. Dec. 4, according to Lt. Robert Moser of the Old Bridge Police Department.

Police responded to the scene along with the Middlesex County Medical Examiner's Office, and an investigation determined that the wooded area was the place where the man died. However, the cause of death is still under investigation, Moser added. Suicide is a possible cause.

"The Medical Examiner's Office is still reviewing," Moser said. "At this time, they don't know what he died from, but there was definitely no foul play."

Due to the condition of the skeletal remains, the body was likely there for at least several months, Moser said.

Though investigators were able to identify the man as an Old Bridge resident, Moser said he was forbidden by Middlesex County guidelines to divulge the name of the victim.
