Washington Irving to come alive at library
Neill Hartley of the American Historical Theatre will appear as author Washington Irving and the character Ichabod Crane in "Ichabod Crane, Washington Irving and the Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a one-man, living-history presentation set for 1 p.m. on Jan. 12 at the Spotswood Public Library, 548 Main St. The event, designed to educate and entertain individuals of all ages, is sponsored by the Friends of the Spotswood Public Library.
The program will introduce the audience to Washington Irving as he tells about his early life and the beginnings of his literary career. Irving will then become the narrator of and an actor in his own work, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Audiences, who will see Irv- ing's alter ego, Ichabod Crane, in the classroom and at a party where he dances with the girl he loves, will follow him on his fateful journey home as he encounters the Headless Horseman and disappears from Sleepy Hollow forever.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. Reservations are recommended. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event.
The program is offered through the Horizons Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
