Two face weapons charges BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE - Two men are facing weapon-possession charges related to suspicious incidents that occurred Christmas Eve.
Police arrested Anthony Luis Marrero, 22, of Elizabeth, on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and terroristic threats at 1:06 a.m. Dec. 24.
Police also charged Thomas Moreno Jr., 28, of Elizabeth, with unlawful possession of a weapon.
The arrests were made after police were dispatched to the Quick Chek on Washington Road, where it was reported that a man holding a handgun had left the business with a small group of men in a red Honda Accord.
Police dispatchers broadcasted the information to all patrol units, which began to canvass the area due to the nature of the call, and because of an armed robbery that occurred at another borough Quick Chek on Dec. 12. The men in this incident were later found to have no involvement in the earlier incident at the Quick Chek on Main Street.
As police searched the area, they received another call from a person on Schmitt Street, who said that a man he was talking to on the phone was threatening to shoot him.
Patrol units located the suspects' vehicle and pulled it over at the intersection of Washington and Deerfield roads. Police had Moreno, the driver, and Marrero exit the vehicle, which they noticed had two large holes that were cut into the rear seat to allow access to the trunk from the passenger seat.
Moreno reportedly consented to a search of the trunk, where police found a black handgun. Police then arrested Moreno and Marrero in connection with the suspicious activity at the Quick Chek on Washington Road, and the alleged threats made to the person on Schmitt Street.
