Robbers hit four gas stations in five days BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
OLD BRIDGE - Police are seeking information on a rash of gas station robberies that occurred along Route 516 recently.
Four armed robberieswere reported in a five-day period between Dec. 22 and 26. In each, a lone robber held up a gas station attendant at knifepoint and demandedmoney.
The first gas station hit was the Getty near Higgins Road at approximately 6 p.m. Dec. 22. The suspect, who was described to police as a 6- foot-tall black man dressed in black clothing and wearing a mask, brandished a box cutter and demanded money. The suspect scratched the victim's face with the knife before leaving the scene on foot, getting away with $1,942.
A different suspect robbed two gas stations the next day.Awhiteman,whowas described as being between 5 feet 4 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, donned a black ski mask and robbed the Coastal gas station at the intersection of Jake Brown Road and Route 516, and later, the Exxon on Worth Place.
The Coastal robbery occurred at 12:45 p.m. Dec. 23. The suspect threatened a gas station attendant with a knife and demanded hismoney. The robber than fled the scene on foot with $900 from the employee, who was not hurt in the incident.
The robbery at Exxon occurred later that day at 6:20 p.m. The suspect held a knife to the station attendant's stomach and demanded money. He fled the scene on foot with $500. The victim was not injured.
The latest robbery was at the Delta gas station, located at the intersection of Route 516 and Old Matawan Road. A white male suspect dressed in a blue jogging outfit and donning a dark mask held up a gas station attendant with a knife that was 8 to 12 inches in length. The worker handed $100 to the robber, who fled on foot.
Old Bridge Police Lt. Robert Moser told Greater Media Newspapers that while robberies of this nature occur periodically in the area, it is uncommon for them to be so frequent.
