BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

OLD BRIDGE - A 19-year-old Parlin man was arrested after he allegedly threatened a police officer with a hatchet at the London Terrace apartment community in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Police charged Juan Adopho Moreno- Hernandez, 19,with aggravated assault, two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest and terroristic threats.

Patrolman Brandon Ward made the arrest after he responded to a Downing Street apartment where police received complaints about excessive noise at 12:55 a.m. Dec. 25. Ward wrote in his report that loud music that could be heard from several housing units away.

Ward knocked on the door of the apartment and rang the doorbell several times before he heard the suspect allegedly yell at him, telling himto go away, according to police. Moreno-Hernandez allegedly directed profanity at Ward when he requested that the suspect come to the door again.

Ward said he then heard the volume of the music increase as he began to pound on the door. The music then stopped and the suspect opened the door.

Moreno-Hernandez stood in an aggressive position, concealing his hands behind his back, according to Ward, and refused to acknowledge the officer's commands that he show his hands.

Ward took a step back and drewhis service revolver after seeing a brown sheath on the floor at the suspect's feet. When the patrol officer again orderedMoreno-Hernandez to show his hands, the suspect allegedly raised a hatchet above his head and yelled at the officer.

Moreno-Hernandez then reportedly took a step to the side "in a flinchingmanner," and dropped the hatchet, whichWard kicked out of reach,Ward wrote in his report.

Moreno-Hernandez then reportedly resisted efforts to be handcuffed, soWard holstered his weapon, wrestled the suspect to the ground and placed him in a compliance hold in order to arrest him.

The suspect allegedly lunged at Ward after hewas placed in handcuffs, and the patrol officer responded by takingMoreno-Hernandez to the ground and holding himthere until additional police officers arrived.

The suspect threatened other police officers when they arrived, according to police, who recovered the hatchet and a black pocketknife that the suspect reportedly had in his back pocket.
