Man dies after car hits school bus

OLD BRIDGE - A 78-year-old Ocean County man was killed in a fatal motor vehicle accident on Perrine Road last week.

Joseph Baist, of Lavallette, was operating a green 1999 Honda Accord on the westbound side of Perrine Road at 2:55 p.m. Jan. 8 when he reportedly drove over the double yellow line in the center of the road, striking a school bus in the oncoming lane, according to police.

Old Bridge resident Kenneth E. Zullo, 52, was driving the yellow school bus, with no children inside, on the eastbound side of the road when Baist's vehicle reportedly crossed into his lane of travel. The Accord struck the bus head on.

Doctors pronounced Baist dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, later that night at 9:50 p.m.

Zullo was not injured in the accident.

Anyone with information on the accident is asked to call Patrolman John Bulin of the Old Bridge Police Department at (732) 721-5600.
