Police investigate GPS thefts
SAYREVILLE - Several incidents of theft from a motor vehicle were reported at Winding Wood Apartments this month, with the latest taking place at buildings 123 and 129 on the same night last week.
Police are investigating the separate, but related incidents that have been reported since Jan. 5. In all cases, the suspect smashed out the windows of the vehicles and stole GPS units that the owners had left in plain sight in their cars.
The incidents have occurred at various times of the day and night.
The theft outside of Building 123 was reported at 6:32 a.m. Jan. 14. A blue 2007 Jeep Commander with a Garmin GPS system worth $425 inside was broken into sometime between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. the night before. The suspect threw an unknown object at the driver's-side window of the vehicle and stole the GPS from the windshield of the car.
Police noted that a male suspect was seen on his bicycle near the vehicle in question around the time of the theft. A witness called 911, but the suspect, described as wearing a black jacket and a skullcap, reportedly hid once he saw police in the area and was not apprehended.
Another victim found damage to a motor vehicle parked outside building 129 at 7:39 a.m. Jan 14. The suspect likely used rocks to smash out the driver's-side window of a gray 2004 Lexus IS300, and stole a Navigon 5100 GPS system that was on the front windshield, according to police.
Officers responded to similar incidents outside Building 39 on Jan. 9 and near Building 6 on Jan. 5.
Anyone with information on any of the car break-ins is asked to contact the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727- 4444.
