Police: Massage parlors were operating illegally
EAST BRUNSWICK - Police charged employees at two local spas for allegedly operating without a license.
DetectiveRobertKearstan investigated a business located at 24 Brunswick Woods Drive after receiving reports that an illegal massage parlor may be operating there. Upon entering the business at 2:42 p.m. Jan. 7, the detective was met by a customer who was leaving, and two female employees.
The employees were unable to provide any proof that the business was properly licensed through the township, according to police. The employees also could not provide the required masseuse identification cards issued by the township.
Police issued summonses to Larisa Diop, 52, and Veronika Beauchamp, 45, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., for operating a spa without a license.
In a related investigation, detectives from the East Brunswick Investigative Division conducted a license check at a spa located at 646 Route 18, Plaza Hill, Suite 208. Upon entering, the officers found one male customer receiving a massage. Further investigation showed that the business did not have a township license to operate as a spa, and the masseuse who was present did not have a township-is- sued masseuse identification card.
Themanager of the business, 43-year-old Junrui Li, of Trenton, was issued a summons for operating a spawithout a license, and 38- year-oldWeiWang, of Flushing,N.Y.,was issued a summons for not having the township's required masseuse identification card.
The spa license requirements and police checks were made possible in an ordinance adopted by the East Brunswick Township Council in 2006, when officials sought to crack down on illegal operations or those that have untrained workers. In part, the ordinance calls for the police department to conduct checks on the establishments and its workers as part of the licensing process.
The township first took advantage of the ordinance in April 2007, when it shut down a West Prospect Street spa after a police officer visited the establishment to check on its licensing information.
Though there were no prostitution-related chargeswith the spas cited thismonth, township police have busted a number of other spas on such charges in prior years.Between March 2003 and April 2005, police made prostitution-related arrests at five different spas, including four onWest Prospect Street and one on Summerhill Road.
