O.B. man gets aiding charge

EAST BRUNSWICK - Police have identified and arrested an Old Bridge man in connection with the theft of a woman's purse from the A&P parking lot on Route 18.

The purse was stolen on Jan. 28 at 10:11 p.m., when a 33-year-old Monroe resident was placing groceries in her vehicle. A silver conversion van stopped next to her vehicle. A black male in his early 20s, and dressed in a dark hooded sweatshirt, jumped out of the van and grabbed the victim's purse from her shopping cart.

The suspect got back into the passenger side of the van, and the van left the area headed south on Route 18, according to police. The victim was able to copy down the license plate of the suspect vehicle and provide the information to police.

The victim was not injured in the incident. Her purse contained cash, identification cards and credit cards.

The suspect vehicle was registered to Vincent Drake, 47, of Old Bridge. An investigation led by East Brunswick Police Detective Joe Alves determined that Drake had been in possession of the van at the time of the theft, and he was then arrested on a warrant for aiding and abetting in the theft of the purse.

Drake was transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, with bail set at $10,000, according to police.

Police are continuing the investigation in order to identify the person who was with Drake at the time of the theft. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Alves at (732) 390-6990.
