Pianist's goal is jazzing it up, and entertaining
East Bruns. native to perform Saturday at Old Bridge library
BY JESSICA SMITH Staff Writer

OLD BRIDGE - Though Dave Schlossberg has been honing his skills as a pianist since the age of 5, he does not necessarily see skill as a top priority.

The 24-year-oldEastBrunswick native is good enough atwhat he does tomake a livelihood of it, but he derivesmost joy frombringing happiness to audiences.

"There's knowledge, and then there'swisdom," Schlossberg said. "You can be as smart as you want, but if you don't use that knowledge to make a difference, then what's the point? I just want to entertain. That's my way ofmaking a difference."

Whether tickling the ivories for work as an accompanist at the Princeton Ballet School, or playing at awedding, barmitzvah or for seniors at assisted living facilities, Schlossberg loveswhat he does.He said he is especially fond of playing for the elderly, seeing their faces light up as the music takes themon a journey.

"I like taking them back in time through my music, to a time that was simpler," Schlossberg said. "I knowthat sounds cliché, but it's true."

Schlossberg'smusic runs the gamut from traditional Jewish songs to jazz and everything in between.

His concert this Saturday at the Old Bridge Public Library dubbed, "GiveMy Regards to Broadway" will treat listeners to Schlossberg's unique renditions ofBroadway favorites.

"I jazz up everything," Schlossberg said. "It doesn't takemuch talent to read fromthe page. I have a talent for improvising, so that's what I'mgoing to do."

Schlossberg said he can never play the same song in exactly the same way, because each performance becomes its own rendition. He even puts his own spin on the time-honored Jewishmusic with which he grew up.

"Jewishmusic is very diverse, richmusic - and when you jazz it up, it takes people on a trip," Schlossberg said.

Nowa resident ofWestWindsor, Schlossberg received his highest level of training from The College of New Jersey in Ewing, where he earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance. There, he also earned the fitting nickname, "Piano Dave." Despite his years of experience and recognition in a field wheremany are never able to quit their day jobs, Schlossberg remains modest about his abilities.

"I always tell people I'mnot interested in being the best there ever was," Schlossberg said. "There aremany peoplewhose style I'd like to emulate, but I know I'm not talented enough, so instead I'd like to entertain."

Those who wish to be entertained by Schlossberg's musical stylings should visit the Old Bridge Public Library on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The concert is part of the library's Saturday Concert Series, and is free and open to the public. The library is located at 1 Old Bridge Plaza in theMunicipal Center at Route 516 and Cottrell Road.
