The Rutgers men's indoor track and field team competed a handful of student-athletes at the 2008 New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Highlighting the Scarlet Knights' performances on the weekend was junior Steve Swern in the 500-meter. Swern placed third out of 56 runners with a time of 1:02.40 (Big East and IC4A qualifier).
Other Scarlet Knights posting Big East and IC4A qualifying times were junior Kyle Grady in the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore Tyrone Putman in the triple jump. Grady ran 8.08 in the hurdles, while Lopez recorded a leap of 47' 3".
Rutgers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, for the Lafayette/Rider Invitational at theArmory. The ScarletKnightswill then gear up for the 2008 Big East Indoor Championships on Feb. 23.
The Rutgers gymnastics teampicked up a home win Saturday over SUNY Cortland, beating the Red Dragons by a score of 188.650- 179.200 in a dual meet at the Livingston Recreation Center.
The win lifted Rutgers to a 7-4 record on the season, and the Scarlet Knights are now 7-0 all-time against Cortland.
On the vault to start the meet, sophomore Laura Sevarino (Cheshire, Conn.) scored a 9.700 to pace the Scarlet Knights and take second overall, followed by sophomoreAlyssa Lewandowski in third with a season-high 9.600 and freshman Nicole Rose in fourth with a 9.500.
Rutgers swept the first five spots on the uneven parallel bars behind a strong performance from senior Stephanie Pannick, who came in first place overallwith her score of 9.550. Sophomore Prishani Seebadri, placed second with a 9.450, while senior Tiffany Schramm and junior Kristy Behr tied for third. Sevarino came in fourth overall as all five athletes placed ahead of Cortland's top finisher in the event.
The Scarlet Knights took the top three places on the balance beam, as Sevarino recorded a season-high performance of 9.725 and junior LataraNorthcutt followed with a 9.600. Schramm's score of 9.500 placed her third.
In the floor exercises, Sevarino (9.750), Rose (9.625), Lewandowski (9.475), freshman Kiah Banfield (9.400), and senior Elizabeth Bohnsack (9.400) all placed ahead of the top Cortland finisher in a strong overall performance. The scores were season-highs for Rose, Lewandowski, and Banfield.
Sevarino's impressive day landed her the top finish in the all-around for RU's third-straight meet with a 38.525, which is also her season-high.
The Scarlet Knights return to action Saturday at 1 p.m. on the road at Yale. Rutgers' Feb. 23 home meet with West Virginia, Bridgeport, Rhode Island, and Ursinus will be the team's annual Alumni Meet, where all alumni are encouraged to attend and cheer on the Scarlet Knights.
The Rutgers Division of Intercollegiate Athletics will honor the three newest members of its Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in ceremonies on the Rutgers campus this weekend. Darren Fenster of the baseball team, Kim Curcuru of the women's tennis team and Chris Sagnella of the men's track & field team will be inducted into the Rutgers Olympic Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the University Inn and Conference Center on Saturday evening. The group will also be recognized during halftime of the Rutgers- Notre Dame men's basketball game Sunday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Fenster was a two-time All-American shortstop for the Scarlet Knights who went on to play six years in the Kansas City Royals organization. The program's all-time leader in several offensive categories, including career hits (315), singleseason hits (101) and career doubles (65), Fenster was a four-year starter (1997- 2000). A 2000 graduate, he rejoined the baseball program as director of operations in 2006. He has been part of three Big East Conference Regular Season and Tournament championships, winning the 1998 and 2000 titles as a player and achieving the feat again in 2007 as a member of the staff. Fenster has also been a part of four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three as a player.
As a senior in 2000, Fenster was a consensus First Team All-American, hitting .433. That year, Rutgers posted its firstever 40-win season and was ranked as high as No. 14 nationally. The 2000 Big East Player of the Year, NCBWA District II Player of the Year, and captain and MVP of a team that featured three future Major Leaguers and a first-round draft choice, Fenster was also a finalist for the prestigious Dick Howser Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate player. He was also a three-time All-Big East selection. Drafted in the 12th round by the Kansas City Royals in 2000, Fenster advanced to the Double A level in the Royals system before he suffered a career ending injury.
Curcuru, a 1990 graduate of Rutgers, was one of the top tennis players in the program's history. During her career, Curcuru amassed a record of 101-65. She was a four-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree and was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year as a senior in 1990, when she was ranked regionally in singles. In addition to her stellar singles career, Curcuru also excelled in doubles competition. She compiled a 95-50 career record and was selected to the Atlantic 10's All-Conference team for four years. Curcuru and doubles partner Pam Fearon, a Hall of Fame inductee in 2005, achieved the highest ranking ever for a Rutgers doubles team when it was ranked ninth nationally in 1990. Curcuru was the ECAC first doubles champion, the Eastern Collegiate first doubles champion and captured a first doubles title at the Syracuse Invitational. Curcuru was named the team's Rookie of the Year in 1987 and was also selected Most Improved Player and Most Valuable Player during her career.
A three-time NCAA First Team All- American in the javelin, Sagnella is the school record-holder in the javelin with a school-record throw of 244-10. An IntercollegiateAssociation ofAmateurAthletes of America (IC4A), Penn Relays and Big East Champion, Sagnella established a one-time meet record at the Big East Championships in the javelin. He was a two-time Metropolitan Conference Champion. Sagnella also competed at the 1996 United States Olympic Trials, where he secured an eighth-place finish. Sagnella was the United States' ninth-ranked thrower in 1996 by Track and Field News, which included both collegiate and professional javelin throwers. He graduated from Rutgers in 1996.
All three inductees were nominated by their peers and elected by the Olympic Sports Hall of Fame committee last fall.
The Rutgers women's tennis team added yet another win to its stellar résumé, defeating the Cincinnati Bearcats, 7-0 on Feb. 10 in its first game of Big East play in 2008. The Scarlet Knights (5-0) were brilliant against their conference rival, snagging their third shutout in five outings this year.
The victory was spearheaded by senior No. 1 Katrina Elder-Bush, who took down Alizee Paradis in two straight sets, 6-4, 6- 3. Junior Polina Zaretser defeated Jennifer Keiner in the second spot, 6-1, 6-2, while freshman Amy Zhang improved her season record to 5-0 with an imposing 6- 0, 6-2 win over Elizabeth Young at No. 3.
In doubles, Zaretser and Zhang handled Paradis and Keiner, 8-1, while Elder- Bush and sophomore Christine Tran beat Young and Val Dandik, 8-2. The sophomore team of KatherineArlak and Caitlin Baker completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win over Ashley Hale and Abigail Mayo.
Rutgers will look to extend its unbeaten streak to six when it takes on Big East opponent Villanova at the Busch Tennis Center on Friday at 3 p.m.
