BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

NEW BRUNSWICK - Authorities are on the lookout for an Old Bridge man who fled a state Superior Court hearing on charges related to a local shooting.

Bernard E. Lopez, 28, of the London Terrace Apartments, Westminster Boulevard in Old Bridge's Parlin section, disappeared from the New Brunswick courthouse where his case was being heard, authorities said.

Lopez was arrested by East Brunswick police on drug charges in June, and was held at theMiddlesex CountyAdult Correction Center, North Brunswick, from the time of his arrest until he posted bail last month, according to Edmond C. Cicchi, warden and department head at Middlesex County Department of Corrections.

Lopez was also charged with possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, in connection with a shooting that took place in Sayreville in 2006. In that incident, Lopez and another suspect, PrinceAlvarado, reportedly got into a verbal altercationwith a group of four people who were at the same nightclub that evening. The two groups met again at the White Castle restaurant on Route 9, and later at the nearby Suburban Mall on Ernston Road, where police found three female victims and one man, all with gunshot wounds, at 4:07 a.m. on Aug. 26, 2006. The victimswere hospitalized and released later that day.

The suspects had already left the scene when police arrived, but police identified the suspects within days. Alvarado, now 26, remains at large, but faces four counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of possession of a weapon, and four counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Alvarado served a two-year sentence from 2000 to 2002 for an armed robbery offense committed on Oct. 11, 1999, according to the state Department of CorrectionsWeb site. Lopez was also in custody in connection with the same incident from 2000 to 2002, and he did an additional four-month termin 2005 for armed robbery and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to the Web site.

Lopez and Alvarado are both described as blackmales. Lopez, who goes by the alias "Champ," is 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, whileAlvarado, who goes by the nicknames "P" and "God," is 5 feet tall and 170 pounds. Alvarado reportedly drives a red 2006 Infiniti G35 two-door motor vehicle.

Peoplewho see Lopez orAlvarado should not attempt to apprehend or approach them, as they should be considered armed and dangerous according to authorities. Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call the authorities.
