Rutgers Roundup

Former Rutgers All-America running back and current St. Louis Ram Brian Leonard will be in New Brunswick March 2 from 10 a.m. - noon signing autographs at RU Crazy. There is no cost for the autograph if the item signed is purchased at RU Crazy. If a purchase is not made in the store, the cost of admission is $20.

RU Crazy is located at 342B George Street in New Brunswick, near the Heldrich Center.

Leonard finished his remarkable career "On the Banks" as Rutgers' alltime leader in receptions (207), touchdowns (45) and points by a nonkicker (272). He established a BIG EAST record with at least one reception in all 47 games of his career.

He finished first in RU history with 678 rushing attempts and fifth in the school's annals with 2,775 rushing yards. His 1,868 receiving yards stand seventh in the all-time record books at Rutgers.

Also an outstanding student, Leonard became the 17th recipient of the Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth, at The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame's 49th Annual Awards Dinner in New York City.

Known in many circles as the "Academic" Heisman, the Draddy Trophy continues to be one of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, recognizing an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.

Leonard was a three-time First- Team All-America selection by Pro Football Weekly. In addition, he earned All-BIG EAST honors (First or Second Team) three times in his career.

The Rutgers men's track and field team scored 50 points en route to a sixth place showing at the 2008 Big East Indoor Championship at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City on Sunday, Feb. 24. The Scarlet Knights had four second-place performances and a total of seven in the top-5 during the weekend event.

Junior Brian Duggan fell just short of successfully defending his Big East title in the pole vault as he finished runner-up in the event, clearing a height of 15' 9". Also taking second was junior Steve Swern in the 500-meter, sophomore Bruce Owens in the 200 and the 4x400-meter relay team. Swern clocked an IC4A qualifying time of 1:01.57 in his race, while Owens took second in 21.37 and the relay team crossed the finish line in 3:11.94.

In the heptathlon, junior Tim Matlack finished third with 5,137 points, followed by sophomore Nick Crosta in fifth with 5,034 points. Crosta won the high jump portion of the heptathlon with a mark of 6' 8", while Matlack tied for second in the same event after clearing a height of 6' 5 1/2".

Rounding out the scoring for the Scarlet Knights was sophomore Nii- Amon Robertson and junior Kyle Grady. Robertson took fourth in the 400 in 48.26 and Grady finished sixth in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.07.

Rutgers will return to action on Saturday, March 8, for the 2008 IC4A Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass.
