Journey from shtetl to ghetto will be discussed

The Alisa Chapter of Hadassah will present Leslie Fishbein, Ph.D., in a program titled "From Shtetl Tochters (Daughters) to Ghetto Girls: The Transformation of Jewish Women on the Lower East Side" at 7:15 p.m. on March 17 at the Jewish Congregation of Concordia, Monroe.

Life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe prepared Jewish women well for life inNew York City. In the shtetls the women worked to support their families, spoke the native language as well as Yiddish, were familiar with the marketplace and interacted with Gentiles. The lecture will explore how in America these women profited from enhanced economic opportunities but suffered greater instability in their personal lives.

Dr. Fishbein is an author and associate professor of American studies and Jewish studies at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She has served as a Fulbright senior lecturer at the University of Haifa, Israel, and is on the advisory board of the Rutgers New Jersey Film Festival.
