Attempted carjacking leads to pursuit along Route 35
BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - An attempted carjacking was reported on Route 35 near Old Spye Road last week.

An Old Bridge couple in a Honda Civic were stopped at a red light on Route 35 southbound at the intersection of Old Spye Road at 10:07 p.m. March 3. The 29- year-old driver stopped the car in the right lane in order to take the jughandle after the light, when another driver in a gray or silver Honda Civic pulled up next to his vehicle in the center lane.

A person in the passenger seat of the vehicle in the center lane got out of the car and attempted to open the door of the victim's vehicle. The suspect, wearing plastic gloves, held a black cloth over the lower portion of his face with his left hand as he continued to pull the door handle. He reportedly yelled expletives at the victim, as he could not break into the locked vehicle.

When another vehicle approached from behind, the suspect returned to his vehicle and the driver of that car drove off at a high rate of speed with the suspect, according to the police report. The suspect did not display any weapons during the incident.

The victim reportedly followed the suspects' vehicle in the area of the Morgan Bridge. It reportedly traveled along the shoulder with no lights on north of the ramp for Viking Marina. The suspects' vehicle then got back onto Route 35 and sped down the highway with the victim in pursuit. Two more Honda Civics, one teal green and the other black, were reportedly on the side of the road and may have been involved with the suspects. The driver of the suspects' vehicle made a right turn onto Shadyside Avenue and then a left onto Ravine Avenue.

Old Bridge police responded to the scene and attempted to stop the vehicle on Laurence Parkway, according to the Sayreville Police Department's report on the incident. At that point, the two occupants of the vehicle reportedly jumped out and fled the scene on foot.

The victim followed the two other Honda Civics involved in the incident, making a right turn onto Laurence Parkway. However, the victim lost the suspects when they got onto the Garden State Parkway headed northbound.

Authorities were unable to find the suspects after a search of the area was conducted with a Monmouth County canine unit. Authorities determined that the suspects' vehicle was stolen from a Woodbridge resident.

Two of the suspects were described to police as Hispanic males in their late teens. The passenger was described as having dark skin and being approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and having a black bushy afro-style haircut. The driver was described to police as being light skinned, clean-shaven, with a tight fade type haircut and wearing a collared shirt with multicolored horizontal stripes.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727-4444.
