Boy, 12, struck while riding bicycle across intersection

OLD BRIDGE- A12-year-old boy riding his bicycle in the Cliffwood Beach section was struck by a motorist and hospitalized Monday.

The boy remained in the hospital at press time Tuesday, but his injuries were not considered life threatening, according to Old Bridge Police Lt. Robert Moser.

"I heard that the boy is going to be OK," Moser said.

The juvenile, who lives in Cliffwood Beach, was crossing Ocean Boulevard at the intersection of Central Avenue at 4:55 p.m. Monday when he was struck by a 2004 Nissan Maxima driven by Mark Williams, 38, of Cliffwood, according to police. Williams was traveling westbound on Ocean Boulevard at the time of the accident.

Williams reportedly swerved to avoid the child, but could not. The juvenile was ejected from his bicycle, Moser said.

The boy was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

The accident is still under investigation and the driver was not charged as of Tuesday, according to Moser.

Both Ocean Boulevard and CentralAvenue are residential roads and have a posted speed limit of 25 mph, Moser said. Ocean Boulevard is often used as a cutthrough street, he noted, since it is a wider road that enters the Cliffwood section of neighboring Aberdeen Township.

Moser asked that anyone who witnessed the accident call the investigating officer, Ronald Atlak, at (732) 739-6218.
