I am currently an Old Bridge High School junior. I would just like to point out the injustice that has occurred in our own school district and the ineffectiveness of our some of our local officials to accommodate the needs of the students and the community.
A proposal to spend a $1.1-million sum on renovations for Lombardi field, which includes a new turf field along with a new track, has been shot down by the board in a 5-4 decision. The money came from Woodhaven, where some against the proposal say it can be used to build a community center, even though there are no immediate plans to do so.
It is unfair to the students and the community that our interests are not at the heart of some board members. Our track is in poor condition, as it has holes along the lanes of the track that could cause injury to unwary athletes just jogging for practice.
As an athlete, I am all too familiar with the condition of our football field and our track. As a football player I have gone to other schools in our conference, and most of these schools have a turf field to play on, where they can play to the utmost ability regardless of the weather. It bewilders me how some of our elected officials cannot see the plight of the school and the community and our need for better facilities.
If this proposal was passed, it would support the athletes who represent our town, and it would help bring our town together with the Pop Warner football team playing on one field for one team.
