Event will benefit teen who had heart transplant

EAST BRUNSWICK - More than 25 teams have already signed up for the Ryan Miller Heart Foundation soccer-athon, set for April 5 at Dideriksen Park and Heavenly Farms, sponsored by the East Brunswick Soccer Club (EBSC).

There are still time slots available for small- and full-sided afternoon games on the grass at Dideriksen Park, Cranbury Road, and full-sided games on the turf fields at Heavenly Farms, Dunhams Corner Road, beginning at 5 p.m. Travel and recreation teams are encouraged to participate.

All proceeds from the soccer-a-thon will go to the Ryan Miller Heart Foundation.

High School and a member of EBSC's Extreme, recently received a heart transplant at Newark Beth Israel Hospital. The soccer-a-thon has been organized to help Ryan's family pay for the medical expenses resulting from his illness and heart transplant.

Ryan's family also plans to make a donation to Newark Beth Israel Hospital on behalf of other children and their families, as a way of saying thank you for the care Ryan received, according to EBSC Extreme Coach Ed Simoes, organizer of the soccer-a-thon.

"This is not a tournament, and it's not about winning and losing. It's about playing soccer for the love of the game and celebrating one of Ryan's great loves in life - soccer," Simoes said.

In addition to games between travel and recreation teams, there will also be a number of exciting evening games: East Brunswick High School and Monroe Township High School players participating in a friendly game, EBSC vs. Monroe Soccer Club coaches, East Brunswick faculty vs. Monroe faculty, and the East Brunswick over-40 men's team vs. Sayreville's over-40 team.

Organizers of the soccer-a-thon are asking participants to seek out family, friends and close neighbors for pledges for the Ryan Miller Heart Foundation. The hope is that all youth players will have at least $25 in pledges when they arrive to participate on April 5. No doorto door soliciting for pledges is allowed.

Contact Ed Simoes at Esimoes@comcast. net, for more information, to register a team to participate, or to make a donation to the Ryan Miller Heart Foundation.
