Sayreville girls track and field team off to a running start Bombers have won four out of five dual meets thus far BY WARREN RAPPLEYEA Staff Writer Awell-rounded Sayreville High School girls spring track team will be looking for its fifth dual-meet victory when it meets South Plainfield on Tuesday.
The Bombers are off to a 4-1 start thanks to triumphs over New Brunswick, Colonia, JFK and Monroe. Sayreville's lone loss came against Woodbridge.
"Our team is solid all around," coach Gerry Carney said. "That's why we're winning, because everyone contributes."
Sayreville's mile relay team has done particularly well and recently posted a time of 4:10 in the Penn Relays. Juniors Chantel King, Danielle Hoyte and Ariana Riegodeios, and sophomore Sarah Barnes comprise the relay team. All four are regularly in the low 60- second range for their respective portion of the relay, and King has come in at 60 seconds flat. Maryann Boulton and freshman Katie Seaman also compete at 400 meters.
Juniors Cassie Campbell and Erin Fitzgibbons have both run well at 1,600 meters. Campbell has a sub-five-minute time to her credit and a 2:35 at 800 meters, while Fitzgibbons has hit the 5:40 mark. Sophomore Shannon McKenna has recorded a time of 12:12 at 3,200 meters. Another miler, junior Melissa Gulyas, is out of the lineup with a knee injury.
Sayreville's sprinters include King, who has run 12.2 at 100 meters, and junior Keisha Green, who has run under 13 seconds, also in 100 meters. Imani Rosario, another freshman, has also done well at 100 meters, Carney noted. The hurdlers include Seaman, Kayla Hubella and junior Jolise Aponte. The Bombers have been without Heather Roy, a hurdler who also runs 400 meters, who underwent foot surgery and is out of the lineup.
Amanda Mathesen, Casia Copeland and sophomore Jamie Unkel participate in all three throwing events. Mathesen and Copeland have both surpassed 90 feet in the discus and have thrown for more than 30 feet in the shot put.
In addition, junior Amanda Cuozzo participates in javelin events and sophomore Cheyenne Grant throws the disc. Leah Thornton, a junior, is the pole-vaulter, and Alexa Congelosi handles the triple jump.
"We have a couple of seniors, a good group of juniors and a lot of talented younger athletes," Carney said. "Our team is definitely going in the right direction."
Sayreville was set to compete in the Greater Middlesex Conference Relays on Tuesday and Thursday and will participate in the Bernards Invitational on Saturday.
