County should keep the 'sex,' forget about the 'Middle'
I would like to thank Taj Ahmad of the Parlin section of Sayreville for his impassioned plea to our "lawmakers, senators and other politicians" ("Suggests Taking the 'Sex' Out of 'Middlesex County,' " Suburban, May 8) to divert their attention away from the less-pressing issues of violent crime, homeland security, universal health care and global warming, to the more-critical need to make our great yet humble county sound less "weird."

I disagree, however, with his proposal that we take the "sex" out of "Middlesex," which highlights and honors our Saxon roots (Middlesex refers to the Central Saxons of Southern England, just as Essex refers to East Saxons and Sussex to South Saxons). I believe the better solution to this etymological dilemma is to take out the word "Middle" and just call ourselves "Sex County."

Or perhaps the best solution is to stop bothering our overburdened officials with trivialities.
