Councilwoman clarifies position on tax hikes
In the June 5 edition of the Suburban, Mike Acker inaccurately quoted me in his article, "Council looks for ways to lower 13 cent hike."

I would like the residents of Sayreville to understand and know that it is not my belief or intent that "in the past few years, taxes should have gone up to provide the revenue increases needed in the budget."

In fact, I understand how frustrated the residents of Sayreville are with each tax increase that has been passed. The point I was attempting to make, (that was not portrayed), is in previous years the governing body significantly raised taxes, those increases were somewhat offset by using part of our budget surplus. However, fiscal responsibility requires us to look for ways to minimize tax increases, while not exhausting the budget surplus. The residents of Sayreville need to understand that maintaining costs today, while insuring for untimely events in the future, is the balance the governing body should be striving for.

Therefore, when I was quoted as saying, "It's been neglected for so many years, we have to address it," I was referring to the balancing act the governing body is required to do when preparing our budget. I don't believe we have made the best choices in the past.

I want the residents of Sayreville to know, that I consider it a privilege and honor to represent the residents of Sayreville on the Town Council. I needed to clarify my statements because the residents of Sayreville have placed their trust in me when they elected me. Their trust is something I will try my hardest to continue to earn, which is why I wanted everyone to fully appreciate my exact position on tax increases and our town's budget.
